The M. Kopernik (Nicolaus Copernicus) Foundation is a non-profit organization that operates Kopernik Lodge and Kopernik Apartments, both located in the Champlain Heights neighbourhood in the City of Vancouver. Kopernik Apartments is currently an aging, two-storey, 33-unit apartment building and Kopernik is proposing to redevelop the building into 94 new homes for seniors, a net increase of 61 homes. Kopernik Lodge, an 87-bed complex care facility next to the apartments, will not be affected by the proposal.
The new apartment building will be operated by Kopernik Foundation and is being built through the Building BC: Community Housing Fund program with BC Housing. Future tenants will have the following mix of rents and incomes:
- 30%: Affordable Market Rent
- 50%: Rent-Geared-to-Income
- 20%: Deep Subsidy
The building is being designed to meet Step Code 4 of the BC Energy Step Code and all units will be adaptable, with a minimum of 5% being fully accessible.
